Todd Reichert and Team Aerovelo from Canada, has successfully beat a world record on September 19 of 139.4km per hour (that’s 86 miles per hour) with their Aerovelo designed bike called “Eta”. Team Aerovelo was founded by Reichert and Cameron Robertson, two fellow graduates of engineering at the University of Toronto, who worked together to design Eta. Eta is made of a carbon fibre composite and it has an aerodynamic, windowless shell that fits over the top of the bike. Reichert actually broke the previous world record of 133.78 km/h (which you can watch below) on September 17 with a speed of 137.9 km/h (85 miles per hour). Eta then broke that record on September 18th by going 139.21km/h, and again the following day with the aforementioned record. The Aerovelo released footage of the September 17th record shows their overwhelming excitement as soon as they realize the record is broken. We can only imagine how they felt after conquering the three-peat.

We see the bike media et. al. falling over themselves to encourage a public dependence on component electronics. And both ebikes and component electronics have an intrinsic designed obsolescence, by virtue of these systems having a limited number of battery cycles. There won’t be ‘vintage’ drivetrains in 20 years as none of the batteries will be usable. I have a birthday coming up, maybe I’m being overly nostalgic to consider this.
