Looking for a fun Halloween activity in So Cal, but want to avoid holiday traffic and chaos? The city of Thousand Oaks community is celebrating Halloween with an open streets festival called Spokes in the Oaks from 10 am – 3 pm. The event will extend along a 1.7-mile route from the intersection of Hampshire and Townsgate roads to the intersection of Agoura Road and Village Glen and these streets will be closed off to motorists. The streets will be alive with people-powered modes of movement, like bikes, skates, and running and walking along with hubs of entertainment, food and activities for all ages. The open street event is inspired by the Ciclovia celebration in Coloumbia, when, each Sunday and public holiday, certain main streets of Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, and other municipalities are blocked off to cars for runners, skaters, and bicyclists. The weekly ciclovías are used by approximately 2 million people on over 120 km of car-free streets. This type of celebration is fairly new to us Americans, as we’ve only been hosting these events around the United States since 2008. Thousand Oaks has the right idea for a Halloween, car-free event, we anticipate a lot of crazy costumes and bicyclists enjoying the open road.

We see the bike media et. al. falling over themselves to encourage a public dependence on component electronics. And both ebikes and component electronics have an intrinsic designed obsolescence, by virtue of these systems having a limited number of battery cycles. There won’t be ‘vintage’ drivetrains in 20 years as none of the batteries will be usable. I have a birthday coming up, maybe I’m being overly nostalgic to consider this.
